There was an article in the Atlanta paper stating that last year about 12% of the children in GA had asthma, as compared to 9.6% nationwide. It also represents an increase from a 10% rate in 2005. The article talks about the associated cost increases. The article also talks about the number of people who can’t afford medicine.
The article says that there is no evidence that air pollution causes asthma but is a significant factor in triggering symptoms. The article talks about efforts to reduce emissions, keeping kids quiet during the worst parts of the day, etc. One thing that I didn’t see mentioned was increasing the strength of the immune system. They want to treat the triggers not the actual causes, weakened immune systems. Blame Atlanta traffic and not bad eating habits.
Rather than improve our kids immune systems, we buy more drugs. Just think how much money could be saved if our kids ate the kinds of foods that strengthened their immune systems instead of buying medicine.
